Description
Filmed in 1966 by director Yasuzo Masumura, RED ANGEL is a tale of a nurse who has to care for some horribly injured soldiers during the Sino-Japanese war at the tail end of the 1930s.
Sight and Sound, p.91:
10/01/2006
"With its mix of shock tactics and lyricism, Masumura's war film, set during the 1939 Sino-Japanese war, often seems like a Japanese counterpart to Sam Fuller's equally pulpy and heartfelt movies..."New York Times, p.E6:
10/24/2006
"[Masumura is a] prolific and influential filmmaker, clearly a rich subject for further investigation."Sight and Sound, p.88:
04/01/2007
"[I]t is all the more pointed and powerful for its restraint....[The score] adds immeasurably to the picture's warmth and intimacy."
