Description
Drew Barrymore makes her directorial debut with this feisty, female-friendly action-comedy. JUNO's Ellen Page stars as Bliss Cavendar, a young woman who longs to break free of her small-town bonds by joining the rough-and-tumble sport of roller derby in nearby Austin, Texas.
Box Office: 09/14/2009 4 star out of 5 — "Barrymore grew up in the movies and clearly has learned from the best....She effortlessly brings the story to life on the screen and, in fact, shows a flair for action with the gripping Derby scenes."Los Angeles Times: 10/02/2009 "What makes WHIP IT a blast is the action in the rink. What give WHIP IT heart is the pathos, pain and mettle-testing elements that accompany any serious athletic competition."Chicago Sun-Times: 10/02/2009 3.5 stars out of 4 — "[I]t has guts, charm, and a black-and-blue sweetness....Ellen Page, still only 22, is the real thing."Rolling Stone: 10/15/2009 "At moments, especially in the conflicted intimacy between Marcia Gay Harden and Daniel Stern as Bliss' parents, Barrymore shows real directing chops."Total Film: 03/19/2010 4 stars out of 5 — "[V]ital and fun....Shauna Cross' smart script keeps things fresh and funny."Empire: 05/01/2010 3 stars out of 5 — "Ellen Page gets the follow-up role to JUNO that confirms her position as the junior leading lady with the most potential."Uncut: 05/01/2010 3 stars out of 5 — "[I]t offers insight into a world rarely depicted in movies: women's sports....There's a lot of warmth here."Sight and Sound: 05/01/2010 "[T]he real novelty is the tone, which — thanks to Shauna Cross' charming script and Barrymore's gung-ho, effervescent direction — is infectious."
